Our Instructors

Good rowing LOOKS easy. But don't be fooled—it is a little more complicated than it looks.  Luckily, there are several excellent Santa Cruz Rowing Club-approved Instructors available for Check-Out sessions, Beginner, and Intermediate lessons. These instructors have had significant rowing and coaching experience and are familiar with SCRC boat handling procedures and policies. Please email one of the instructors through the links below to set up one-on-one or small group coaching.

Hello everyone! My name is Elliot Meyer. I’m a new rowing instructor! I’ve been rowing since 8th grade and going to boathouses since I was 8 years old. I love sculling and have primarily raced in singles. After some prompting from former coaches at the Capital Rowing Club in DC, I became a US Rowing certified coach. I then took up coaching my old juniors’ competitive team, as well as at multiple learn to row camps. I’m a freshman at UCSC, studying psychology. I really look forward to working with and meeting all of you!

Rowing as a sport is a low impact form of exercise which is great for cardiovascular fitness and overall muscular strength and vitality. Open water rowing out of Santa Cruz provides an opportunity to experience the varying moods of the sea and perhaps glimpse the lives of its inhabitants. As an instructor, I can draw on my experience as a sailor, kayaker and surfer to share some knowledge of the ocean and shoreline as well as the basics of rowing technique, safety and navigation.

I have been rowing on Monterey Bay and in Elkhorn Slough since 2005. Along with the physical strength and flexibility that I have gained through open water sculling, I find the beauty of our local water and marine wildlife inspirational. Come learn how to row on the ocean. It's fun!  Whether you are a beginner or an experienced sculler, I will teach you the skills you need to row safely on the bay.

Thanks, Margaret
